One rough prompt. The engine found SREF 2852, 1304 and 1669. Then the balance shifted — and so did everything else.
This is what went into the box. No cleanup, no artistic vocabulary, no attempt to speak Midjourney's language. Just a scene.
The engine scored all 4,001 SREF codes against those filters and that text. It returned three: 2852 (Seasonal Solitude), 1304 (Serpentine Passages), 1669 (Hidden Temple Realm).
Same prompt, no style code. Midjourney falls back on its own training. The result is dark, cinematic, slightly theatrical. Not wrong — just generic. There's no visual identity to it.

The prompt didn't change. The scene didn't change. The SREF code is what defines the visual language — the rendering quality, the light, the way the scene feels. Left: a dark movie set. Right: a handcrafted miniature world with warm fire and texture detail you can almost touch.
Shifting the balance from Balanced to Tags changes how the engine weights the filters vs the prompt text. It doesn't cost an extra search — it reshapes the visual output from the same idea.
The prompt was the same in all four cases. The subject, the scene, the words — identical. What changed was which SREF code was attached, and how much weight the engine gave to the tags vs the text.
The SREF code carries a visual identity — a rendering signature developed over thousands of reference images. When you attach it to a prompt, it doesn't just add a filter. It rewrites the visual contract of the image. The cave becomes a diorama. The family becomes a folk illustration. The same 33 words, four completely different photographs.
This is the thing that's hard to explain until you see it. The prompt gets you in the room. The SREF code decides what room it is.
